South County Amateur Radio Emergency Service

South County ARES is primarily for those hams who reside in southern San Mateo County and want to serve their community in an emergency by providing backup communications using amateur radio.

Training and practice are emphasized. One of the biggest challenges in an emergency is passing messages accurately and in the briefest way possible. These are covered in our training sessions and the weekly Net provides a way to improve those skills.

Participation in events is a wonderful way to improve skills and build confidence and connections with other hams who will likely be serving during an emergency.

The purpose of the South County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (SCARES) group is to provide emergency communication for Belmont, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Menlo Park/Atherton, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, and Woodside/Portola Valley when called upon by police, fire or an office of emergency service.

We do not collect dues because our members contribute extensively with their time and expertise. We rely on donations from our supporters.

For our out-of-area visitors, these cities are in the southern portion of San Mateo County on the San Francisco Peninsula.
